Tonight, my time away from my little tin house with Michael and Jake hits me hard. I haven't slept well in days. This strange image captures how I feel right now. High above there's a blue sky, but I feel like this glass awning, heavy with sodden moss. The repercussions of my sister being in a body cast are so incredibly difficult. She may not sit for a month and who knows when she will be able to lift her son into her arms.
"Carry you?" says Jiggy, asking to be picked up. We are walking slowly over uneven cobblestones. My sister who has always whisked down trails like a moth in the night, now pauses in the path with each step gently, like a monk in walking meditation.
Jiggy washed his horses in the bath today. I found these three little horses outside the back door and put them the tub. He was very excited and asked me to play with him. I asked them their names. He introduced Jiggy, his favorite horse and then he showed me Mama and Papa. Papa is the spotted grey; Mama is white with orange patches. Then he scrubbed them each with a nail brush.
Life isn't fair, and as we get older it seems to get harder. We must get stronger and stronger, more brave, resilient and compassionate to weather the inevitable challenges. The best medicine besides a walk out doors is to look into the innocent and trusting face of a child.
