Jakalof Peak, Orange Glow
oil on canvas
24" x 24"
Alaska State Museum Permanent Collection
This painting came quickly with a surge of confidence like a Chinese parade. Cadmium orange ground is a stage for flourishes of Prussian blue drawing, dripping into the bay-- ribbon dancers of light, the reflection of Jakalof--then the creamy yellow orange sky, silouette of the mountain and I was there so suddenly I stepped back. Stepping back, stopping--its half of painting.
This is one of a trio of paintings in the All-Alaska Juried Art show in 2012. The others are Cold River Blues and Winter Island. MASS MOCA curator, Susan Cross, gave the body of work Third Place. Her review is the best an Alaskan painter could hope for. She said, "The paintings in this show made me fall in love with landscape again."
