Cold River Blues
30" x 30"
oil on canvas
Alaska Contemporary Art Bank Collection
A view of the Yukon River, this painting is currently on tour in Anchorage Museum's All-Alaska Juried Art Exhibit. Like Winter Island which came later, Cold River Blues grew quickly and boldly out of a long day of stretching out on other smaller canvases including Beluga Flats. I'm excited about my reach from subtly mixing and blending hues at skyline versus the stark drama of the red underpainting and dripping in the foreground. I sequestered Cold River for a couple years, studying it. Sometimes a painting is my best friend, reminding me of my potential. But eventually I realize I have to let go a bit, branch out. My husband, Michael, inspired the name Cold River Blues by taking many pictures of it and designed a blues album cover featuring this painting.
